Exploring Places XL: Saint Petersburg

The eighteenth postcard we’ve received comes from one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Saint Petersburg.  In our exploration of the city, we’ve had the invaluable help of Helena Prada, a Galician teacher from Verín (Ourense) who travelled to Saint Petersburg last August.

PLACES TO VISIT

Saint Petersburg was designed to become Russia’s window to the West; this explains why the city is full of impressive sites like:

The State Hermitage

Founded by Catherine the Great in 1764, the Hermitage used to be the Emperors’ residence or Winter Palace. Today it is an impressive museum of international art and culture. Its collections, of which only a small part is on permanent display, comprise over three million items, including the largest collection of paintings in the world. The collections occupy a large complex of six historic buildings along Palace Embankment, including the Winter Palace. Apart from them, the Menshikov Palace, Museum of Porcelain, Storage Facility at Staraya Derevnya and the eastern wing of the General Staff Building are also part of the museum.

It is the largest Russian Orthodox cathedral in the city. It is dedicated to Saint Isaac of Dalmatia, a patron saint of Peter the Great, who had been born on the feast day of that saint.

Church of the Saviour on Spill Blood

This Church was built on the site where Emperor Alexander II was fatally wounded in March 1881.The church was built between 1883 and 1907. Architecturally, the Cathedral differs from St. Petersburg's other structures. The city's architecture is predominantly Baroque and Neoclassical, but the Savior on Blood harks back to medieval Russian architecture in the spirit of romantic nationalism.

Mariinski Theatre

Opened in 1860, the Mariinski became the preeminent music theatre of late 19th century Russia, where many of the stage masterpieces of Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, and Rimsky-Korsakov received their premieres. Helena was lucky to attend one of the most emblematic ballet performances here, Tchaikovsky’s “Lake Swan” and has been very kind to share with us one of the photos of the performance.

Nevsky Prospect
Russia’s most famous boulevard, Nevsky Prospekt is also the heart of St. Petersburg.

Stretching for 4 kilometers from the Alexander Nevsky Monastery to the Admiralty near the Neva River, it buzzes with energy day and night. A stroll along this boulevard will take you past the Kazan Cathedral (modeled after St. Peter’s in Rome), Gostiny Dvor (one of the world’s first indoor shopping malls) or Dom Knigi, arguably the largest and best bookstore in the city.

Postcard 24 is on its way to Hsinchu, in Taiwan!

Postcard 24 will travel 11,890 kilometres before our Taiwanese friend, Tiffany, receives it!

Hope Tiffany likes this postcard written by Ismael and that features one of the most famous Carnival celebrations in Ourense: Xinzo de Limia's Entroido and its well-known pantallas!

Ismael has found very interesting information about Hsinchu City and has shared it with us HERE. Remember that you can also read about Xinzo's Entroido in our section DISCOVER OURENSE.
Thanks a lot, Ismael!

Discover Ourense XXIV: Xinzo de Limia's Carnival

Postcard 24 features Xinzo de Limia's well-known Carnival.

As it’s been mentioned before, Xinzo's Carnival is one of the longest in Spain. The Pantalla is the main figure of the carnival in Xinzo, and runs through the streets in groups of two or three with two swollen pig bladders in the hands making huge noise. If the pantalla finds a male relative or neighbour without a disguise, they will take him into a bar, to pay the fee for not being dressed properly, which is a glass of wine. The group of pantallas will sing a couple of traditional Galician songs while they have the glass of wine.

This is a video recorded, edited and starred by Rubén Gómez which shows how he gets ready for going to the streets and feeling A Pantalla. Enjoy it!

PLACES TO VISIT

18 Peaks Mountain Park

18 Peaks Park, Miramar-Hsinchu.com
18 Peaks Mountain Park was designated a forest park back in 1928 during the era of Japanese rule. The park stretches eight kilometers from north to south in a crescent shape, embracing the city from the southeast. As its name suggests, the mountain is composed of 18 peaks. The Jieshou Pavilion of Longevity sits at the highest point in the park, 131.79 meters above sea level. Winding through dense woods, the trails used to be rough and remote. But in recent years, the city has redone the trail system here, paving some trails with asphalt, and adding an "Osmanthus Alley" so that the going is easier and adding pavilions so that hikers can stop to rest and drink free tea.

Green Grass Lake or Qingcao Lake

Green Grass Lake. Guide-Taiwan Adventures
This lake has been opened for quite some time now and is part of a reservoir which stores water from the Yaker River. Although small in size, the lake is the oldest scenic spot in Hsinchu and fringed by centuries old temples amid lush greenery.
Qingcao Lake used to be a mini-sized lake hundreds of years ago, which was also used as a dam. After the end of the Japanese colonial period in Taiwan, the first magistrate of Hsinchu County ordered to reconstruct the dam, resulting in a 30 square kilometer area for storing water. It was the first large-scaled construction in Hsinchu since the establishment of the local government.

First Hsinchu Station

Hsinchu station
Hsinchu Station is a railway station on the Taiwan Railway Administration (TRA) Western Line and the Neiwan Line. It is located in East District, Hsinchu City, Taiwan. Hsinchu Station is a major station on the Western Line and the western terminus of the Neiwan Line.
The main building of this station is one of the oldest train stations alongside Taiwan's Western Main Line, its Baroque style main structure was built in 1913 during the Japan Occupation Era, and has been appointed as National Heritage Site.

The East Gate

Established in 1733, the city used to be surrounded by bamboo groves. Hence, it was given the name "Chuchien," which means "bamboo wall." In 1826, members of the local gentry asked the authorities to erect a city wall made of brick and stone, and the request was granted. Construction started in 1827, and four gate towers were erected. As a result of city planning during the Japanese era, the wall and other gates were torn down in 1902, leaving only the East Gate.

Hsinchu East Gate. Wikimedia Commons
The East Gate has a granite foundation with an arched doorway and a tower on top. Originally a wooden structure, the tower was later rebuilt with concrete. It has 24 pillars and a gable-and-hip roof with double eaves. Elegant pendants hang below the upturned swallowtail eaves. Square loopholes on the battlements were used to shoot through. A stele beside the gate documents the history of Chuchien.

Postcard 23 has been sent to Ghent (Belgium)

One of our ESO 4 students, Dani, has sent a postcard to Ghent, a Belgian city we know very well because we received a lovely postcard from here a few days ago!

Dani has chosen a postcard designed by one of his friends, Rubén Sotelo, which was chosen as one of the finalists in our Ourense-themed illustration contest.

Visit our section DISCOVER OURENSE to know more about Saint Martin's Cathedral. Remember you can find detailed information about Ghent in EXPLORING PLACES.
Thank you, guys!

Discover Ourense XXIII: Self-made postcard of Saint Martin's Cathedral

The postcard Dani sent to Ghent, in Belgium, featured one of the symbols in our town: its cathedral. This is a special postcard because it was drawn by Rubén Sotelo, one of our students.

Orense Catedral de Carmen Baena para Arquivoltas

The history of the Cathedral is tied to the diocese of Ourense, whose origins are lost in time, although names are now known of Bishops from as far back as the 6th century. the cathedral is Transition Romanesque and its layout is that of a church of pilgrimage, with influences from the church of Santiago de Compostela and similarities, by chance or not, to that of the cathedral and the Church of San Vicente of Ávila.

If you want to know more about Ourense Cathedral, read one of our previous posts HERE.
